Data Science, Network Analysis, Policy Analysis
He received his Ph.D. in 1989 from Kyushu University, Japan, for his research on nuclear physics in a project on quark-gluon plasma formation (QCD phase transition) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA. In the same year, he joined the Institute for Nuclear Study at the University of Tokyo as a postdoctoral fellow (JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow), where he was engaged in research on high-energy physics. From 1990 to 2010, he worked for Hitachi, Ltd. as a researcher and senior researcher. During this time, he was a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied plasma computational physics in 1997, and at the International Energy Agency, IEA, where he studied energy policy, including smart grids, in 2010. In 2011, he became an associate professor at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, and since 2012 he has been teaching as a professor at Kyoto University. Based on academic results, he has been working for international organizations on evidence-based policy recommendations revealed by data science. He has published 106 peer-reviewed journal papers and 23 books. He has also applied for and registered 37 patents in Japan and internationally.
