High-performance and intelligent simulation and engineering with their applications to society, environment, transportation, disaster prevention, and mitigation issues
Head of the SIC Academic Council. Vice President of the University of Tokyo. He plays an active role in industry-academia collaborative creation. Themes that he has been working on for 30 years are research and development of high performance and intelligent simulation and engineering, together with their applications to social/environment/traffic, disaster prevention and mitigation problems. The idea behind such broad research activities is that the society and the environment should be recognized as large-scale complex systems, in which people, artifacts, and nature are strongly interacted with each other. Additionally, he has a fundamental recognition that understanding and modeling of such large-scale complex systems, highly accurate quantitative prediction and simulation-based design of them are essential for seeking practical and essential solutions to the contemporary problems that the modern society faces.
